Pop Culture with Tatiana

First of all, it was a hell of a night for Houston rapper Megan Thee Sallion. She took home the award for Best New Artist, making her the first female rapper to win since Lauryn Hill in 1999, and the first rapper to win since Chance the rapper did so in 2017. She also won Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for her “Savage” remix collaboration with Beyoncé. So Congratulations Megan! I love her!

Now the performance with Cardi B

The stage transitioned to the future as Cardi B proceeded to perform her latest number one single UP (the single became number one after this controversy we are about to address). Resembling a badass fembot in a metallic pink suit, the Bronx star dominated in front of avant-garde visuals. She was soon joined by Megan as they wowed viewers with a vibrant rendition of “WAP”.

With a larger-than-life stripper heel taking center stage, Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion showcased their most provocative dance moves for their first televised performance of the hit. It was undeniably one of the night’s most unforgettable moments.

As you can see from the photos, it was not the most kid friendly performance, but Cardi B is not a children’s act!

The controversy

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s were burning up the FCC’s phone lines during Sunday’s Grammys, as the regulatory body received multiple consumer complaints regarding the two’s performance of their hit song “WAP.”

The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) did not say how many complaints the commission received, but it was described as “an average amount for this type of event.” The FCC is tasked with making sure the broadcast airwaves are free of “obscene” programming. The FCC defines this as “material that, in context, depicts or describes sexual or excretory organs or activities in terms patently offensive as measured by contemporary community standards for the broadcast medium.”

According to WFAA-TV in Dallas, the FCC received 80 complaints — compared to 1,300 for last year’s Super Bowl halftime show featuring Jennifer Lopez and Shakira. The WFAA-TV report, which cited an open-records request, said the FCC would not comment on whether an investigation was under way for the Grammys performance.

And this was just the tip of the iceberg, the REAL attack came from the conservative right. Fox News’ Larry Elder compared their song and choreography to a “strip club”

Then came the twitter war between Cardi B and Candace Owens.

Who is Candace Owens? She is an American conservative author, talk show host, political commentator, and activist. She’s done some outrageous claims throughout her career, she’s claimed “Black Lives Matter is “poisonous”” explaining that: “I took them [BLM protestors] on because I believe that their ideas are poisonous. I also believe that they are intellectually dishonest.” She is also (obviously) a staunch supporter of Donald Trump.

You get the idea, now back to the Grammy performance.

The back-and-forth between the rapper and the right-winger began when Cardi sent out a tweet that sarcastically celebrated her Grammy perfomance making Fox News.

Cardi shared a clip of Owens’ March 16 appearance on Fox News, where the political commentator claimed the performance at the Grammy Awards signified “corrosion” and “the end of an empire”.

Cardi B first replied : Matter fact I’m just going to thank Candy. She put my performance on Fox News giving it more views that boosted the views on YouTube and is counting towards my streams and sales 😜 STREAM UP AND WAP .REMEMBER GROWN PARENTS ONLY YOU CAN MONITOR WHAT YOUR KIDS WATCH NO1 ELSE.

Actually, the twitter feud eventually became very ugly.

“There’s not a single person that can look you in the face and say that they hope their daughters turn out like you, and that has to hit home for someone like her, who has a young daughter, and I hope that it does,” Candace said.

The public spat between Candace and Cardi escalated when Cardi posted a (allegedly) fake photo of Candace apparently claiming her husband cheated on her with her brother.

Candace then taunted Cardi for deleting the posts.

She jibed Cardi for pulling the tweets — telling her “too late, degenerate”.

And she has vowed to pursue a lawsuit against Cardi over the tweets.

She tweeted: “Just spoke with my family. I am 100 per cent suing Cardi for that nonsense.”

Megan Thee Stallion did not get involved in the Twitter exchange but did say last year that she was “taken aback” nu the backlash for WAP “if you have an issue with what I’m saying don’t listen to it,” she told TIME Magazine. “Tune out, ’cause I didn’t ask you to tune in.”

As for people commenting that Cardi B is destroying the minds of young girls, this is what she had to say.

You know what I think? For the record I love Cardi B and I do not think there is anything wrong with her songs, music videos, performances etc. because this is a free world, and like Megan Thee Stallion said, if you do not like it do not watch it. It is NOT marketed for children, it comes with a Parental Guidance certification, so parents need to monitor what their kids watch.

And at the end of the day, it is just entertainment isn’t it? This kind of content is made for a mature audience. And a mature audience should be able to tell the difference between reality and values, versus pure entertainment. Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion aren’t being taught in school! They’re not being preached about in religion! They’re not here to teach us about life’s principles, they are here to entertain us and this is exactly what they are doing!

For example, I do not like horror movies, so I do not watch them. If you do not like their music/performances, then do not watch/follow them. Easy.

And they are not poisonous because this content is made for a mature mind. I love Cardi B but I am not twerking half naked all over the place because I know these are not my values personally and they are not reflective of how MY parents raised ME. If someone else does not mind twerking half naked all over the place, if they are a mature independent adult, then why not?

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion are two extremely talented entertainers and I want to thank them for all this FUN content during a global lockdown!

Also to all the so-called “conservatists” that have a problem with Cardi and her performance, look at what you caused after the Grammys:

You took her to number 1 one the US Billboard hot 100. The world’s most prestigious music chart.

Conservatives did this 🙂 They made Cardi B a record breaking and multi platinum selling artists. Good for her!

Also about sexual freedom. I personally believe a song like WAP is good in the sense that it encourages women not to be ashamed about demanding sexual pleasure or feeling confident. People underestimate how important this is. Women’s sexuality has been shamed for so long, it has always been about the “man” enjoying sex. Songs and movements like “WAP” encourage women to embrace their sexuality and not be ashamed of it!
