Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik have finally revealed the name of their baby girl

Gigi Hadid and boyfriend Zayn Malik have finally revealed the name of their adorable baby girl. The 25 year old supermodel updated her Instagram bio and added “Khai’s mom”.

In September 2020, Hadid gave birth to their daughter, reportedly on a farm in rural Pennsylvania where she and Malik have been isolating since May. Since then she has posted photos with her baby girl on social media, but she has not yet shown her daughter’s face.

Up until now Gigi had kept the name of their daughter private, causing many pop culture fans to speculate on social media on which one they’d chosen. But on Thursday she revealed to her more than 62 million Instagram followers that Zayn and her had picked the name “Khai”.

According to a name origin website, the name “Khai” is of Egyptian descent and means “crowned”. Gigi Hadid, who’s real name is Jelena Noura Hadid, is of Palestinian descent on her father’s side, and Zayn Malik is of Pakistani descent, so the speculation was that they’d pick a name of Middle Eastern or Arabic origin.

Personally I am Lebanese, and I am intrigued by the pronunciation of this name. In the West, it would undoubtedly be pronounced similarly to Kai or Kye, which I am assuming is what Gigi and Zayn are going for. Gigi was born and raised in Los Angeles, and Zayn is from Bradford in the United Kingdom.

But in the Middle East, when you add a “Kh”, you pronounce the beginning of the name kind of like a soft growl from your inner throat. Almost as if you were clearing your throat. And in Lebanese and Palestinian Arabic, Khai means “brother”.

So I am very much looking forward to hear how the couple will pronounce the name, but I think it will cause some confusion amongst extended family members.

The Victoria Secret model and former One Direction singer have been in an on-and-off relationship since 2015, but have become more “on” in recent years.
