The former senior members of the British royal family have announced they will do their first major extensive sit-down interview since their engagement interview in 2017.

And they haven’t chosen just anyone to sit down with, they’ve brought out the “big guns”, they will be interviewed by legendary television host Oprah Winfrey. The news has garnered worldwide attention.

This announcement came the day after Meghan Markle and Prince Harry confirmed they were expecting their second child. They already have a 2 year old son Archie Harrison.

CBS announced the news at the beginning of the week, revealing that “Oprah With Meghan and Harry: A CBS Primetime Special,” will air on March 7. The interview will be 90 minutes.

The special will cover a range of topics, including their marriage, their latest projects and life since stepping back from their senior royal duties. Markle is also expected to talk to Winfrey first about motherhood and the couple’s new life in California. Harry will join in the conversation later.

Oprah’s best friend Gayle King has said that the presenter has been given complete freedom over what topics she discusses with the couple.

Winfrey had attended the duo’s May 2018 wedding at Windsor Castle, and is currently their neighbour in Montecito, CA where the couple moved this year.

Winfrey is also working with Harry on a mental health docu-series for Apple TV+.

The decision to do this very public tell-all interview has awoken many Meghan and Harry critics, who are accusing her of being a hypocrite. On the one hand, they left their positions as senior members of the royal family to have “more privacy”, and yet they have not stopped opening up to the public. The only difference is that it is on their own terms, which I can imagine is what Meghan wanted.

They seem to continuously want to attract global media attention, and critics called the choice to do the interview a ‘funny change of tact’ for a couple who have ‘complained about privacy and intense media scrutiny’.

Critics such as British TV Host Piers Morgan have been very vocal about Meghan and Harry’s “lack of respect” towards the British Royal family.

Since they formally left their royal duties, technically they are under no obligation to inform Buckingham Palace of their plans to sit down for any interview. But critics of the couple suggest that they should have had the ‘common courtesy’ to tell the Queen about their upcoming ‘nuclear’ TV interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The couple reportedly did not inform Her Majesty in advance that they were planning to participate in the 90-minute special.

Buckingham palace and the royals are understandably worried, since almost every time a member of the royal family has sat down for such an extensive interview, they’ve delivered bombshell statements.

We all remember Princess Diana’s infamous BBC Panorama interview in which she spoke about Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles’s extramarital affair.

In 2019, Prince Harry sat down with ITV’s Tom Bradby where he spoke about his fractured relationship with his elder brother.

“We’re certainly on different paths at the moment but I will always be there for him and as I know he’ll always be there for me. We don’t see each other as much as we used to because we’re so busy but I love him dearly,” he told Bradby at the time.

Then there’s also the story of Prince Andrew completely shooting himself in the foot.

It was recently revealed by The Daily Mail that Harry and Meghan are set to lose all their remaining royal patronages after the Queen asked the couple to relinquish their links with any organisations passed down through the Royal Family.

Harry would be stripped of his three remaining honorary military titles and, potentially, his patronages with the Rugby Football Union, Rugby Football League and the London Marathon.

Meghan would have to step down as patron of the National Theatre.

However, the Queen has previously said that she is “entirely supportive” of Harry and Meghan’s desire for a new life but “would have preferred” for them to keep their senior roles. She also said her and her husband were “delighted” that the couple is expecting their second child.
