She’s back with a BANG! Review of Cardi B’s new music video UP

Seems like Cardi B (who’s real name is Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar just FYI) doesn’t like putting too many letters in her song titles. Last year it was WAP, now it’s UP, maybe next single will be “I” or “A”, if it is you heard it first hear.

Anyways Cardi B has been hyping up her new single UP for the past week, and in my opinion she did not disappoint!

The song

The new single is Cardi’s follow-up to her raunchy hit with Megan Thee Stallion “WAP”. In an interview on Apple Music, Cardi talked about how she decided to pivot away from the sexual themes of that song and make a song that—like her first mixtape—is inspired by Chicago drill. “I was young, and I liked that and everything, so my mixtape was very all about gangster violence,” she said. “If it’s up, then it’s stuck, and that’s where I wanted to take it with this record.”

With a catchy, ear-worm hook “if it’s up, then it’s up, then it’s up, then it’s stuck,” Cardi raps about her sexual conquests, immense wealth, and other girls who simply can’t keep up with her.

“Said my face bomb ass tight / Racks stack up Shaq height / Jewelry on me flash light / I been lit since last night,”

Honestly it is classic Cardi B and if it ain’t broke don’t fix it! She does what she does and she does it well. She finds beats that work incredibly well with her tone of voice.

Now the video that’ll make your jaw drop

The new Tanu Muino-directed visual opens with a shot of Cardi in a cemetery near a gravestone that reads “RIP 2020.” She kicks off with a funeral for 2020, before launching into scenes that see her embodying a hood ornament and an oyster’s pearl.

There is a sequence of so many scenes and visuals accompanied by fun choreography and bold costumes. Personally first thing I thought is WOW CARDI B HAS HUGE BUDGETS for music videos and after her past successes, it is well deserved.

Even though the video is not exactly the “sex show” that the “WAP” video was, Cardi B couldn’t help but shock us. There is a scene in which an oyster opens, and she is lying in it with four other scantily clad ladies. First there is a product placement for a sex toy, and then suddenly Cardi B and the other ladies start kissing and exchanging spit, literally!

I am surprised YouTube is allowing this but for the millions if not billions of views Cardi B gets, I think they can make exceptions.

Also another shocking scene look!

The album

“UP” marks Cardi B’s first release of the year and serves as the second single of her upcoming album after “WAP” with Megan Thee Stallion.

Cardi is evidently taking her time to drop her Invasion Of Privacy followup, and previously stated that she refuses to succumb to the industry pressure of consistently releasing new material. “If you don’t have a super crazy smash, it’s like ‘oh, you flop, flop flop.’ The song could be like two-times platinum, and it’s still flop, flop, flop. You’re always under pressure, and I feel like it’s not fair,” she said. “I feel like there’s male artists who go two years without putting a f*cking song out, and they don’t go, ‘Oh, you’re irrelevant. It’s over for you.’ Me, I didn’t put out songs for nine months, and it’s like, ‘Oh, she’s irrelevant. She’s over. She’s a flop. We told you that.’ That type of sh*t started to get to me, like crush me.”

But she also said she plans to put out an album this year and has “like 50 songs” recorded. “I’m just still not satisfied,” she said. “If I’m not satisfied, I’m just not satisfied, but I really want to put out an album this year. I feel like I have no choice now. Now, I feel like I exceeded my limit of holding. I just need to stop with the fear.”
